Move a wallbox without the hassle: what to know before moving home
From electrical compatibility to reinstallation costs, here is what to consider before taking your home EV charger with you.

Moving home involves far more than packing boxes, changing utility accounts and deciding where everything will go. For EV drivers, there is another practical question to answer: can you move a wallbox and continue using it at your new property?
In most cases, the answer is yes. A home EV charger is not necessarily tied permanently to the building where it was first installed. The unit can often be removed, transported and connected to a new electrical system, provided that it belongs to the user, remains in good condition and is suitable for the new property.
There is, however, an important distinction to make from the outset. Moving a wallbox is not simply a matter of taking it off one wall and attaching it to another. The charger itself may be reusable, but the power supply, electrical protection, load management equipment and installation documentation must all be assessed again.
In other words, you can usually take the wallbox with you, but its reinstallation should be approached as a new electrical project.
Can you move a wallbox from one home to another?
A wallbox can generally be relocated if it is a standalone product that you own and it is not subject to contractual restrictions. Before arranging its removal, it is worth checking three things: ownership, the condition of the charger and its compatibility with the new property.
When a home EV charger can be removed and reused
Relocation tends to be straightforward when the wallbox:
belongs to the vehicle or property owner;
is working correctly and remains in good condition;
still has its technical documentation;
continues to be supported by the manufacturer;
can be configured for the power available at the new property;
is suitable for its future installation location.
A wallbox with a high rated charging power does not necessarily have to operate at its maximum output. A 22 kW unit, for example, may be configured to charge at a lower power if the product, vehicle and electrical supply allow it.
This flexibility means that many chargers can be reused even when the new home has a different supply capacity or energy contract. Actual compatibility must nevertheless be confirmed by the electrician or contractor responsible for the new installation.
Owned, rented or supplied as part of a service: what to check
Not every wallbox installed at home automatically belongs to the person using it.
The charger may have been:
purchased directly;
included with the electric vehicle;
supplied by an energy provider;
rented or leased;
provided on loan;
installed as part of a charging service or multi-year agreement.
Relocation is usually possible when the unit was purchased outright, although the warranty terms should still be checked. In the other cases, the contract must be reviewed before any equipment is removed.
A charger supplied on loan, for instance, may need to be returned to the provider or relocated through an approved procedure. Removing it without authorisation could result in additional charges, interrupt a connected service or breach the agreement.
It is therefore worth finding the purchase invoice, contract and original installation documents before making a decision. A little checking at this stage can prevent a much more awkward problem in the middle of the move.
When leaving the charging point behind may make more sense
Being able to move a wallbox does not always mean that moving it is the best option.
If the property is being sold or rented out, an installed EV charging point may make it more attractive to prospective occupants who already drive an electric car or plan to buy one. In this situation, leaving the charger in place and purchasing another for the new home may be worth considering.
This option may also make sense when:
the wallbox is relatively old;
software updates or manufacturer support are no longer available;
the new installation requires different accessories;
the charger is not suitable for the new outdoor location;
removal and reinstallation would cost almost as much as replacing it.
The comparison should not be limited to the purchase price of the unit. Its remaining service life, the work required at both properties and any changes in charging needs should all be taken into account.
Which parts of the wallbox installation can be moved?
A home charging setup consists of several elements. Some belong to the charging unit, while others form part of the building’s electrical installation.
Understanding the difference helps avoid a common mistake: assuming that the entire setup can be removed and recreated in another property without any changes.
The wallbox, charging cable and removable accessories
The main reusable component is the wallbox itself.
Depending on the model, it may also be possible to take:
the attached or detachable charging cable;
the connector holder;
RFID cards or tags;
external modems or communication adapters;
the mounting bracket;
compatible external accessories.
Before transportation, the unit should be checked for cracks, deformation, moisture ingress, signs of overheating and damage to the cable or connector.
Smaller components matter too. A deteriorated seal or damaged cable gland may compromise the enclosure once the wallbox is installed again, particularly if the new location is exposed to harsher conditions.
Power cables, protection devices and cable routes
The circuit supplying the wallbox was designed for a specific property, distance from the electrical panel or distribution board, charging power and installation method. It should not therefore be treated as a removable accessory belonging to the charger.
Cables, conduits, circuit breakers, residual current protection and other fixed components will normally remain at the original property. They should only be removed when this is technically appropriate and agreed as part of the work.
After the wallbox has been disconnected, the unused circuit must be made safe. Hiding loose conductors behind a cover plate or simply removing the charger is not enough. The electrician must also deal with the dedicated circuit, its termination and any associated devices in the electrical panel.
At the new property, the supply circuit must be inspected or installed according to the new location, charging power and product requirements.
At international level, IEC 60364-7-722 addresses electrical circuits intended to supply electric vehicles, including relevant requirements for EV charging installations. National wiring rules and local building, electrical or fire-safety regulations may introduce additional obligations, so the project must always be checked against the requirements in force in the country concerned.
Can the power meter and dynamic load management system be reused?
Wallboxes with dynamic load management generally use a measuring device to monitor the building’s electricity consumption and adjust the power allocated to the vehicle.
The power meter, current sensors and communication accessories may sometimes be moved as well, but this should never be assumed.
The new electrical installation may have:
a different electrical panel or distribution board;
a single-phase supply instead of a three-phase supply, or vice versa;
different space for installing current sensors;
a greater distance between the main supply, meter and charger;
a solar PV system with a different configuration;
a newer or more appropriate energy meter.
Before removing these components, their compatibility with the new system should be confirmed. In some cases, transferring them is simple. In others, it is more practical to leave the existing accessories in place and install new ones at the destination.
How to remove a wallbox safely before moving
Removing a wallbox should not be treated as a DIY job. The charger is connected to a fixed electrical circuit and may rely on protection devices located in the property’s electrical panel.
Even when the work looks straightforward, both the charger and the circuit left behind must be handled correctly.
Why a qualified electrician should remove the wallbox
Switching off the power is only one part of the process. The electrician must identify and isolate the correct circuit, confirm that it is no longer live, disconnect the conductors without damaging the terminals and inspect the charger.
Incorrect removal could:
damage internal connections;
affect seals and cable glands;
compromise the enclosure’s resistance to water or dust;
leave electrical conductors inadequately protected;
cause problems during reinstallation;
affect the manufacturer’s warranty conditions.
The benefit of using a qualified EV charger installer is therefore not limited to immediate electrical safety. Careful removal also increases the likelihood that the charger can be reinstalled successfully.
The exact qualifications required vary between countries. The work should always be carried out by a professional who is legally authorised to work on fixed electrical installations in the relevant market.
Making the old circuit safe
Once the charging station has been removed, a decision must be made about the circuit that previously supplied it.
If the circuit will no longer be used, the electrician may disconnect it at the distribution board or terminate and identify it in accordance with local requirements. If another wallbox may be installed later, part of the existing infrastructure might be retained, provided that it remains suitable and is left safely terminated.
Any finishing work should also be agreed in advance, including:
filling mounting holes;
removing or retaining the wall bracket;
tidying or removing surface-mounted conduit;
protecting electrical boxes;
updating labels in the distribution board.
These details can easily be overlooked during a move, but they matter when the property must be handed over to a buyer, tenant or landlord.
Checking the socket, connector, cable and enclosure
Once the wallbox has been removed, it is a good time to carry out a thorough inspection.
Particular attention should be paid to:
the condition of the vehicle connector;
wear along the charging cable;
cuts, crushing or excessive bending;
the condition of the socket, where fitted;
seals and gaskets;
corrosion or oxidation;
the security of terminals;
signs of unusual heat;

A small issue can often be addressed before the new installation. Refitting the charger without inspecting it, on the other hand, risks carrying an existing fault into the new property.
How to transport and store a home EV charger
A wallbox is designed to remain securely fixed to a wall, not to travel unprotected in a car boot or removal van.
During transportation, it should be treated as electrical equipment, with particular care given to the charging cable, connector, display and any projecting components.
Protecting the wallbox from impact, dust and moisture
The original packaging is usually the best option when it is still available. Otherwise, a strong box and suitable protective material should be used to prevent the charger from moving around.
The cable should not be bent into tight loops or used as a handle. The connector should be protected from impact and dirt, while screws, brackets and smaller accessories can be placed in a separate labelled container.
If the wallbox will not be reinstalled immediately, it should be stored in a dry location away from dust, condensation, extreme temperatures and heavy objects that could damage the enclosure.
Documents, login details and device information to keep
Before leaving the old property, collect:
the installation manual;
the model and serial number;
the purchase invoice;
warranty documents;
app login details;
administrator access details;
RFID cards or tags;
configuration codes;
diagrams or documents from the original installation.
The documentation for the old electrical installation will not certify the work carried out at the new property, but it may still help the new electrician understand how the charger was previously configured.
It is also worth checking that the wallbox is linked to your own account rather than to the installer, previous property owner or a service provider whose contract has ended.
What to check before reinstalling the wallbox
Compatibility with the new property should ideally be assessed before the charger is removed.
A preliminary site survey can confirm whether the wallbox is reusable, identify the work required and reveal any conditions that could make a different solution more sensible.
Single-phase or three-phase supply and available power
The first consideration is the type of electrical supply.
A three-phase wallbox may require a three-phase supply to provide its maximum output, although some products support alternative configurations. Similarly, a single-phase wallbox can be connected within a three-phase installation when this is permitted by the manufacturer and accommodated correctly in the electrical design.
Charging power should not, however, be considered in isolation. The assessment must include:
the supply capacity available at the property;
other loads operating at the same time;
the maximum AC power accepted by the vehicle’s onboard charger;
the wallbox’s adjustable power range;
dynamic load management;
normal charging habits.
Installing a 22 kW wallbox does not automatically mean that the property must provide 22 kW exclusively for the vehicle. The unit may be limited to a lower output and adapted to the available supply, provided that the manufacturer supports this configuration.
When moving the unit to another country, the installer should also check local voltage and frequency, phase configuration, product approvals, connector compatibility, connected services and the availability of manufacturer support in that market.
A new dedicated circuit, distance and protection
The cost and complexity of reinstallation often depend more on the cable route than on the wallbox itself.
If the parking space is close to the electrical panel, the new circuit may be relatively straightforward. If the cable must pass through several rooms, floors, courtyards or shared areas, the work will require a more detailed assessment.
The electrician will need to consider:
cable length;
installation method;
conductor size;
intended charging power;
voltage drop;
required electrical protection;
the wallbox manufacturer’s instructions;
exposure to weather or physical damage.
For this reason, buying cables or protective devices identical to those used at the former property is not advisable. The new circuit must be designed for the new installation.
Installing the wallbox indoors or outdoors
A wallbox previously installed in an enclosed garage may need to be mounted under a carport or on an external wall at the new property.
In this situation, the product’s suitability for the expected environmental conditions must be checked. Factors include rain, dust, direct sunlight, temperature, condensation and the possibility of accidental impact while vehicles are manoeuvring.
The installation location matters for everyday use too. The charger should be within practical reach of the vehicle inlet without leaving the cable under tension or creating a trip hazard across a walkway.
A well-planned position makes charging easier every day. Over time, that convenience is anything but a minor detail.
Internet connection and smart charging functions
Moving the wallbox may also change its connectivity.
Wi-Fi coverage in the new garage might be weaker, while an Ethernet connection could require additional cabling. Some chargers support mobile connectivity or can continue providing basic local charging without internet access, but the available functions vary between models.
Before reinstallation, check which features depend on connectivity, such as:
firmware updates;
remote troubleshooting;
charging statistics;
scheduled charging;
user authentication;
communication with external platforms.
The charger may still be able to deliver power when some smart functions are unavailable, but it is better to understand these limitations before the work is completed.
Solar PV integration and dynamic load management
If the wallbox previously charged the vehicle using surplus solar energy, that functionality will not automatically move with the unit.
At the new property, it will be necessary to assess:
the presence and configuration of the solar PV system;
the location of the measurement point;
power meter compatibility;
the communication method;
the direction in which energy flows are measured;
wallbox settings;
any battery storage system.
The same principle applies to dynamic load management. The measuring and control system must be installed and configured again so that charging power can respond correctly to consumption at the new property.
How the wallbox is reinstalled at the new property
Once the site survey and compatibility assessment have been completed, the new installation can begin.
It is not usually necessary to use the same electrician who installed the charger at the previous address. The new contractor should, however, receive the product manual and any relevant technical documentation.
Installing the supply circuit and connecting the charger
The first stage is to prepare the power circuit and the required protective devices.
The wallbox is then mounted in the selected position and connected in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Damaged mounting components, items that are unsuitable for the new wall or parts that are no longer available should be replaced with compatible alternatives.
Reusing the mounting bracket may be possible. Automatically reusing the same screws and wall plugs is a different matter. Concrete, insulated external walls, brickwork and lightweight partitions may all require different fixing systems.
Setting charging power for the new electrical supply
Once connected, the charger’s maximum output must be configured.
The setting should reflect the property’s supply capacity, other electrical loads and any load management system. The aim is not necessarily to charge at the highest possible power, but to find a reliable balance between charging speed and the energy requirements of the building.
In many homes, the vehicle remains parked for several hours. A moderate but stable charging power may therefore be more than sufficient to restore the energy used during the day or complete a charge overnight.
Reconfiguring the app, users, RFID cards and schedules
A move is also a useful opportunity to tidy up the wallbox’s digital configuration.
The following steps may be required:
connecting the charger to the new network;
updating the installation address;
pairing the wallbox with the app again;
configuring the new power meter;
removing former users;
registering new RFID cards;
changing charging schedules;
updating the firmware.
A new energy tariff or different off-peak periods may also mean that the old charging schedule is no longer suitable. Reconfiguring the charger around the new property and tariff helps prevent inefficient or inconvenient charging.
Commissioning and the first charging session
Before the wallbox returns to normal use, the necessary installation checks and commissioning tests must be completed.
The final test should confirm:
correct initiation of the charging session;
communication between the charger and vehicle;
stable power delivery;
operation of the electrical protection;
correct dynamic load management;
network connectivity;
solar charging, where configured;
the absence of errors in the app or on the charger.
Only after these checks have been completed should the wallbox be returned to normal operation.
Will you need new electrical installation documentation?
Product compliance and electrical installation compliance are not the same thing.
The product’s declaration or certification relates to the wallbox as manufactured and placed on the market. Documentation for the electrical work relates to the circuit, protection, connection and tests carried out at a particular property.
The name and form of this documentation vary between countries. It may be called an Electrical Installation Certificate, Certificate of Compliance, declaration of conformity, inspection report or another locally defined document.
The important point is that the new installation must be carried out, verified and documented in accordance with the rules that apply where the wallbox is being installed.
Why the documentation from the former property is not enough
The previous documents describe work completed at the old property, including the cable route, protective devices, materials, installation location and electrical characteristics.
Once the wallbox is moved, these elements change. The old documents cannot therefore certify the new circuit or the work carried out at the new address.
Put simply, installation compliance does not travel with the charger like a label attached to its enclosure. It relates to the complete installation in a specific location.
Which documents to keep after reinstallation
Depending on local requirements, it is advisable to retain:
the electrical installation certificate or equivalent document;
applicable test and inspection results;
the circuit diagram or design documents, where required;
information about the materials and protection devices used;
the wallbox installation and user manuals;
the invoice for the work;
the product model and serial number;
settings for the load management system.
These records may be useful for maintenance, warranty claims, future electrical work or the sale of the property.
How much does it cost to remove and reinstall a wallbox?
There is no single price that applies to every relocation.
The cost of installing the wallbox at the new property will often account for a larger share of the total than removing the unit from the old one. Costs rise in particular when the parking space is far from the electrical panel or when extensive cable routing, electrical upgrades or building work are required.
Removal, a new circuit, protection and building work
The main cost items may include:
the electrician’s visit;
wallbox removal;
making the former circuit safe;
repairing or finishing the old mounting area;
transportation;
a site survey at the new property;

A reliable quotation therefore requires information about both properties. An estimate based solely on the wallbox model would provide only a very limited picture.

Moving the charger is often worthwhile when it is recent, fully operational and compatible with the new electrical installation.
Relocation becomes more attractive when:
the new circuit is straightforward to install;
no unusual accessories are required;
the charger is still under warranty;
its features continue to meet the user’s needs;
leaving it at the former property would offer little additional value.
In this situation, reusing the wallbox extends its useful life and avoids an unnecessary purchase.
When buying a new wallbox may be the better option
A replacement may make more sense when the existing charger:
is not suitable for the new installation;
shows signs of wear or damage;
no longer receives software updates;
lacks the required connectivity;
cannot integrate effectively with the new solar PV system;
requires accessories that are difficult to source;
has a power rating or configuration that does not suit the new property.
This decision is best made before the wallbox is removed. A site survey allows the two options to be compared with a much clearer understanding of their actual cost and practicality.
How reinstallation changes with the type of property
The same wallbox may require very different work depending on whether it is being installed at a detached home, in a shared residential garage or at a rented property.
Moving a wallbox to a detached home
At a detached property, planning the cable route and choosing the installation position is usually more straightforward.
The electrician must still assess the distance from the electrical panel, available power, outdoor conditions and any planned integration with solar PV.
Where the new home has a garage, carport and solar system, the move may even offer an opportunity to improve energy management compared with the former installation.
Reinstalling a wallbox in an apartment building or shared garage
In an apartment building or shared residential garage, additional issues may need to be considered:

Is moving a wallbox to a new home really worthwhile?
In many cases, moving a wallbox is both possible and cost-effective. A recent, well-maintained product may continue to provide reliable charging for years after a change of address.
The decision should not, however, be based solely on whether the unit can physically be removed. Ownership, warranty coverage, product condition, the characteristics of the new electrical installation and the cost of the work must all be considered.
The principle is straightforward: the charger may be transferable, but the surrounding infrastructure must be designed for the new property.
By arranging the site survey, removal and reinstallation in the right order, EV drivers can move home without giving up the convenience of private charging.
