Solar panel warranties: duration, performance and installation cover
Panels, installation work, inverters and batteries have separate cover. Here is how to read the terms and compare them before choosing a system.

Two solar quotes might advertise 25-year and 30-year panel warranties, but those numbers alone are not enough to compare them. One may refer to manufacturing defects, while the other describes the power the modules should retain over time. Installation work, inverters and batteries need to be checked separately.
Solar panels generally come with two manufacturer warranties: a product warranty and a power warranty. Depending on the model, product cover commonly ranges from 15 to 25 or 30 years. Power warranties often run for 25–30 years, with a final threshold of roughly 80–88% of initial rated power. Installation work has separate cover. Consumers also have statutory rights against the seller: EU rules provide a minimum two-year legal guarantee for goods, while national legislation may provide greater protection.
How long do solar panel warranties last?
There is no single duration. It depends on the manufacturer, product range and model, and any promise of 25 or 30 years must be read alongside what it actually covers. Some ranges offer longer warranties, sometimes up to 40 years, subject to conditions such as registration and country eligibility.
When reading a quote, distinguish four types of protection:
Product warranty: covers the material and manufacturing defects specified by the manufacturer. Check the duration, start date and remedies for the proposed model.
Power warranty: sets the module's minimum power over time, using a defined degradation curve and measurement method. It does not guarantee the system's annual electricity generation in kWh.
Installation cover: concerns the contractor's work and obligations under the contract and applicable national law. Its duration is separate from the panel warranty.
Legal guarantee: protects consumers against a lack of conformity under the applicable consumer sales rules. The seller is responsible, and these rights are separate from commercial warranties.
Inverters and batteries have their own terms. A meaningful comparison therefore starts with the component and type of cover, rather than the largest number on the quote.
Warranty duration is not the same as service life
The end of a power warranty does not mean a panel stops working. After 25 or 30 years, a module may continue generating electricity even though the manufacturer no longer guarantees a minimum power threshold. How long solar panels last, and what affects their service life, is a separate question.
Panel warranties and system warranties: what is the difference?
A photovoltaic panel, or module, converts sunlight into electricity. A solar PV system includes much more: mounting structures, cables, protective devices, an inverter, possibly battery storage and an energy management system. Design, installation, connections and commissioning are additional elements. Calling all of this a “system warranty” can suggest a single package where there are actually different documents and responsibilities.
Consider three examples:
A module has a manufacturing defect: the product warranty may apply.
A module works but loses more power than the stated threshold allows: this concerns the power warranty and its prescribed testing procedure.
A mounting point or electrical connection has been installed incorrectly: this is an installation issue.
All three can reduce generation, but the warranties are not interchangeable. The manufacturer provides its commercial panel warranty; the seller is responsible for statutory consumer sales rights; the installation contractor is responsible for its work under the applicable rules. Sometimes the seller and installer are the same business, sometimes they are not.
Legal guarantees for solar panels in Europe
The EU minimum and national differences
For consumer purchases from a professional seller, EU consumer rules provide a minimum two-year legal guarantee. National rules can offer longer protection and determine important details. This EU framework should not be treated as the law for every European country: purchases outside the EU require the relevant local rules to be checked.
The seller is the contact for a lack of conformity. Repair or replacement must be free under the applicable conditions; price reductions or termination of the contract are available in specified circumstances. Business purchases do not automatically benefit from the same consumer protections.
Time limits for defects to appear, deadlines for bringing a claim and the effect of a repair are different issues. Check the national rules and the date of the contract rather than assuming that one deadline applies throughout Europe.
When incorrect installation is a lack of conformity
Where installation is part of the sales contract and is carried out by the seller or under its responsibility, incorrect installation can constitute a lack of conformity. A commercial warranty cannot remove statutory consumer rights. For a supply-and-install contract, check how the agreement is structured and who is responsible for each part.
Solar panel product warranties
Which defects are covered?
A product warranty covers defects in module materials and manufacture within the manufacturer's stated terms. The exact scope is set out in the document for the installed range: conditions may differ by product family, market and sales period. Finding a brand's current warranty online is therefore not enough. You need the terms for the model you bought.
Visible damage does not establish which cover applies. Cracks, delamination or connection problems may result from an original defect, an impact or incorrect installation. A photograph helps describe the issue, but a technical assessment establishes its cause.
When does the manufacturer's warranty start?
The start date may be the sale, delivery or another event specified in the terms. If panels spend time in storage before installation, this difference can matter. Ask which document applies, when cover begins and how that date is evidenced. Invoices and serial numbers are essential records.
Check extensions separately. Are they included in the quote, or does someone need to register the product? Obtain written confirmation of the model and procedure.
Faulty panel: repair, replacement or refund?
The terms may provide for repair, replacement, an equivalent product or a refund. If the original model is discontinued, a replacement may differ in appearance or rated power, and a competent technician must check compatibility with the system. These remedies do not replace statutory remedies where they apply.
Who pays for transport, removal and reinstallation?
On a roof, a replacement panel is only part of the cost. Fault diagnosis, safe access, removal, shipping, refitting and system checks may also be needed. Two warranties of equal length can therefore offer very different practical value: one may include these costs while another covers only the panel.
Ask which expenses the commercial warranty includes, who authorises the work and whether labour is reimbursed. For consumer sales, Article 14 of Directive (EU) 2019/771 addresses removal and installation, or the associated costs, under the stated conditions. National implementing legislation governs the practical claim.
Solar panel power warranties
What does guaranteed minimum power mean?
Panels gradually lose some of their power. A power warranty sets the maximum loss allowed by the manufacturer over time, using a specified curve and test method. The reference is module power measured under standard test conditions, rather than the energy the complete system will generate in a year.
On an actual roof, sunlight, temperature and orientation all affect output. Daily monitoring can identify anomalies, but it does not by itself prove that a panel has fallen below its contractual threshold.
How to read a degradation curve
A linear warranty often allows a larger initial drop followed by a constant annual reduction. Take an illustrative curve with 98% of initial power remaining after year one, followed by a reduction of 0.40 percentage points a year.
For a 450 W module, this gives:
After year 1: 98% of initial rated power, or 441 W.
After year 25: 88.4%, or 397.8 W.
After year 30: 86.4%, or 388.8 W.
These are thresholds measured under test conditions, rather than the power the panel delivers every day on the roof. Percentages vary between products: only the installed model's curve applies.
Why a power warranty does not guarantee kWh
Power, measured in watts, describes a panel's capability under defined conditions. Energy, measured in kilowatt-hours, also depends on how long that power is available. A cloudy summer, new shading or an inverter outage can reduce electricity generation without any panel being faulty.
The generation estimate in a quote is not automatically a guarantee either. It helps with system sizing and investment planning, but falling short does not by itself establish a panel defect.
How is abnormal degradation confirmed?
The first step is to locate the cause of the reduction. A technician compares equivalent periods, looks for new shading, and checks strings, connections, the inverter and alarms. If the issue is traced to the modules, the manufacturer's procedure sets out the measurements required, the information to submit and who pays for testing in each outcome.
Warranties for solar PV installation work
What is the installer's responsibility?
Mounting structures, fixings, cable routing, connections, protection, configuration and final checks are separate from panel manufacture. If a problem arises from the work, the relevant agreement and installation obligations must be examined. Conversely, a manufacturing defect is not automatically the installer's responsibility simply because it fitted the module.
A faulty connection can reduce generation even when the panels meet their specifications. Replacing them would not solve the problem. Diagnosis therefore comes before assigning responsibility.
How long is installation work covered?
This depends on the contract, national law and the legal classification of the work. Europe does not have one universal installation warranty. A contractor's commercial workmanship promise should also be distinguished from statutory liability for defective work.
Ask for written details of the work included, where to report defects, how diagnosis is arranged and whether a call-out charge applies. Installation cover and panel warranties concern different things and may start and end at different times. A module may remain under warranty after a separate workmanship warranty has ended.
Panel defect or installation error: how can you tell?
Lower generation can result from shading, dirt, a broken connection, an inverter alarm or a module fault. Historical data, safe visual inspections, measurements and system documentation are needed. Keep commissioning records and do not attempt to alter electrical connections yourself.
Inverter, battery and other component warranties
How long is a solar inverter warranty?
The panel warranty does not cover the inverter. It has its own brand, model and terms, and its commercial warranty is often shorter than the panels' cover. When comparing quotes, ask which inverter is included, when its warranty starts, whether registration is required and how support is delivered. If a paid extension is offered, check what it adds: duration, covered parts and service arrangements.
A system can stop generating while its panels are working correctly and its inverter is reporting a fault. Check error messages and other components before assuming the modules are responsible.
What to check in a battery storage warranty
Years alone are not enough for batteries. Check guaranteed charge and discharge cycles, energy throughput and retained capacity: the amount of energy the battery can still store compared with its original capacity.
A technical specification for cycle life is different from a contractual warranty. Read the conditions to establish the coverage period, guaranteed retained capacity and permitted operating conditions. Temperature limits, usage settings and the way throughput is calculated can matter.
Who coordinates support across several components?
Panels, inverters, batteries and energy management devices may have different manufacturers and warranties. Where a fault involves several devices, establish who checks compatibility and coordinates the work. Ask which support services are available in your country and who handles on-site visits. A manufacturer's support arrangement in one market should not be assumed to apply across Europe.
Structures, cables and protective devices
Mounting structures, fixings, protective devices and wiring may have different manufacturers and terms; other issues depend on installation. Water entering the building after roof work, for example, concerns mounting and weatherproofing rather than panel power. You do not need a certificate for every screw, but you should know what products are installed and who is responsible for fitting them.
Hail and weather damage: warranty or insurance?
Does a solar panel warranty cover hail?
Usually not. Damage caused by an external event is different from a manufacturing defect. If hail damages a solar panel, being within the warranty period does not automatically mean the manufacturer will pay for replacement. Read the commercial warranty exclusions and the insurance policy separately. The same distinction applies to lightning, surges, wind and impacts.
The cause still needs to be established: a fault appearing after a storm was not necessarily caused by it.
How resistant are panels to hail?
The standard hail impact test associated with IEC 61215 uses ice balls 25 mm in diameter. This is a qualification test, rather than a promise of resistance to every hailstorm. Larger hailstones can break the glass of a certified module.
In exposed locations, consider modules tested for more severe hail impacts and assess suitable insurance. Check the actual test report and policy terms, including excesses and exclusions.
What should you check in the policy?
Policies differ in excesses, limits, reporting obligations and required evidence. Check whether cover includes hail and other weather events, electrical damage and liability to third parties, and whether it applies to the panels alone or the complete system.
After damage, the installer and insurer have different roles: the installer identifies the fault and makes the system safe, while the insurer assesses cover.
Maintenance, modifications and reporting defects
Do system modifications invalidate the warranty?
It depends on the terms. Rather than assuming every intervention voids cover, ask which changes are permitted, which are excluded and whether a connection between the modification and the defect must be established. Keep records when extending the system or replacing a component.
The same principle applies to solar panel maintenance: any required periodic checks should be specified in the contract or manufacturer instructions. Panels, inverters and batteries may have different requirements.
How to report a suspected defect
The warranty normally specifies a contact channel, the information required and reporting deadlines. You may need the model, serial number, invoice, photographs and a description of the issue. Some manufacturers require claims to go through the seller or installer.
Do not remove a panel or climb onto the roof to collect evidence. Instead, note when the problem started, save monitoring screenshots and error messages, and gather the system documents.
How to compare the warranties in two solar quotes
Start with the exact brand and model of the panels, inverter and any battery. If a quote only says “premium monocrystalline panels”, you cannot identify the applicable warranty. Then establish who sells and who installs the system. Where partners carry out the work, clarify where to send a claim and who coordinates it.
For each quote, record:
Panel model: product code and applicable warranty document.
Product warranty: duration, start date and covered defects.
Power warranty: thresholds over time, testing method and claims procedure.
Remedies: repair, replacement, equivalent product or refund.
Intervention costs: diagnosis, transport, roof access, removal and reinstallation.
Installation work: cover, responsible contact and reporting procedure.
Inverter and battery: duration, cycle or retained-capacity conditions and extensions.
Registration: who completes it and what confirmation you receive.
If one offer provides 30 years of power cover and 15 years of product cover, while another provides 25 years for both, the biggest number does not decide the comparison. Price, technical specifications, included costs and installation quality matter too.
Before signing, ask: “If a panel defect is accepted, which diagnosis, removal and reinstallation costs are included, and who organises the work?” A reliable supplier should answer with documents and procedures. Ask for anything unclear to be written into an updated quote.
Documents to keep for a warranty claim
Contract, invoice and installation records
Keep the accepted quote, contract, invoices and handover documents, including the electrical inspection, compliance and commissioning records required in your country. Keep the design and initial operating data so later performance can be compared with the starting point.
The invoice identifies the contracting business and transaction date. The installation date does not necessarily determine when commercial warranties start. Ask for any additional service promised verbally to be confirmed in writing.
Serial numbers and warranty certificates
A manufacturer claim requires more than the brand name: you need the model and serial number of the installed modules. Ask for a serial-number list and, where possible, photographs of labels taken during installation. Save the warranty terms supplied at purchase, as online documents may change. Do the same for the inverter and battery.
Registration and extensions
Not every warranty requires registration, and not every extension is automatic. Check whether the installer registers the products for you, retain confirmation and verify that the registered model matches the installed equipment. Transcription errors are much easier to correct immediately than years later.
If you sell the property, an organised folder with models, serial numbers and contacts will help the next owner. Transferability of commercial warranties still depends on each manufacturer's terms.
Frequently asked questions about solar panel warranties
How many years are solar panels under warranty?
It depends on the model. Product warranties commonly range from 15 to 25 or 30 years, while power warranties often run for 25–30 years. Some ranges offer longer terms, subject to conditions such as registration and market eligibility.
Is the legal guarantee two years everywhere in Europe?
No. Two years is the EU minimum for consumer goods under the relevant sales rules, and national legislation can provide greater protection. Countries outside the EU have their own frameworks. Installation liability and commercial warranties must be checked separately.
Does lower-than-expected generation trigger the warranty?
Not automatically. Reduced kWh can result from weather, shading, other faulty components or an optimistic initial estimate. The power warranty concerns module power measured by a defined method, so diagnosis comes first.
Is replacing a faulty panel always free?
It depends on the applicable cover. Some commercial warranties only cover the replacement unit; others include transport and roof work. Under the legal guarantee, the applicable consumer rules provide for free repair or replacement and, in the specified circumstances, removal and installation costs.
Does the panel warranty also cover the inverter and battery?
No. Each component has its own conditions. Inverter cover is often shorter, while battery warranties may include cycle, throughput or retained-capacity limits. Ask for each document.
Does the warranty cover hail damage?
Usually not. A product warranty covers specified defects, while damage from external events normally needs suitable insurance. Check the policy excesses, limits and exclusions.
Who should I contact if I suspect a panel problem?
Start with the business that supplied or installed the system so it can collect information and arrange diagnosis. The seller is responsible for statutory consumer sales rights. The manufacturer follows its own commercial claims procedure, and the insurer assesses insured external damage.
Compare the cover before choosing
Duration matters, but it is only the first detail. A useful warranty explains what is covered, when protection starts, how defects are demonstrated, who takes action and which costs are included. For panels, separate product and power warranties; for the system, also consider installation, the inverter, storage and other components.
Put the documents from two offers side by side and ask these questions before signing.
